New Dawn

The title of this post is a rip-off.

I stole it from my favourite Don Slepian album. Slepian is an electronic composer who has self-released a ton of albums. But it’s his 80s releases I love and listen to, and often. New Dawn is comprised of two songs, both with a running time of almost a half-hour each. I believe it’s classified as New Age music, but that moniker is as useless to me as the name World Music is. I love Don Slepian and I also love that he named this 1980 album, New Dawn like a coded declaration for his future (New Don).

New Jamie isn’t as clever a title. But that’s what this is. I used to write these recommendations over on Substack, and you can find those here, if you’re interested. And now, I’m writing them here, on a platform I suspect isn’t partially funded with money collected through dubious means. Also, as an artist / designer, I haven’t had a website in over a decade.

So to commemorate my resurgence, my waking from the cyber-dead, here’s a playlist of music that is on my mind as I embark anew.

What you can expect in this:

—futuristic synth sounds from the past

—post-punk that crashes along like banged metal trash can lids.

—mutant dance tunes

—no Don Slepian

And yeah, I’m no fan of Spotify and I too want a means not ruined by the quest for endless growth at the expense of humanity. Soon, together, maybe we can get free.
